The Happy River Float is for the rafter looking for whitewater adventure.  This river is very technical and very scenic.  Not known for its fishing, the water rapids will keep you entertained throughout the entire trip.  This river is the home to the Rainy Pass section of the Iditarod Trail, one of the most technical and difficult stretches of the “last great race.”

The Whitewater Float begins at Sheep Lake near Rainy Pass in the Alaska Range.  After a short portage over 0.3 miles of low tundra you are at the shores of the Happy River.  The Happy is quite narrow and technical throughout the trip, with many rapids, canyons, and other terrain.  From its confluence with the Skwentna River the float becomes much calmer.  The meandering Skwentna flows until you cross the confluence with the Talachulitna River; from there it is just 2.5 miles to the pickup point.

Float Season:  June 15th – September 30th

Fish:  Although this river does get runs of King, Red, Silver, and Chum Salmon, as well as Grayling and Dolly Varden, there are very few places with enough slack water to catch fish.  This river is highly technical and fishing usually is quite limited. Expect to be able to fish the very end of the Happy at the confluence with the Skwentna River.

Fishing Regulations: For the most up to date regulations please visit the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game
